I am thinking of going with four mp40's. 2 on each side.

Or would it better going with 2 mp60's

I was thinking in the long run it will be advantageous to have multiple mp40 pumps to place around colonies of corals. Or should I be thinking multiple mp60 pumps. I am afraid the mp60's would be too strong.

Thoughts/experiences?

If it's full sps and it's a 8 foot tank and you plan to have a sps dominated tank I recommend mp60s because you can also control them. But mp40s would do the job just as well.

I would go with 2 Mp60's one at each end and 2-4 Mp40's on back wall depending on your rock work and coral

What i was going to recommend and what i had on my 7x2x2.
But the rear mp40's were turned way down, barely running.
Almost might be better off with one of each on the sides and forget the back.
Depends on your rock i guess.

Appreciate the advice; here is a pic to show the rockscape. Right now I'm thinking 6 mp40qd along the back wall. They will have to be turned way down. Not sure if that will keep the barebottom clean.

Might also want to try a Gyre 150 in the mix on one side.
You have open space along the top all the way across, at least till your sps grow in thick.
It would mix up your flow a bit. Nice and wide from the gyre and some more narrow flow from the vortechs.

8' tank............ The new QD are great silent pumps. As above stated I would also look in to a Gyre.
If you get a Apex module for it (will be released soon) you can run the Gyre schedules but you can download also the Vortech and Tunze modes.
I run mine XF on a tunze mode and some how it will give a a ton more flow.
I had mine set for the 100% on the Gyre controller but now I have similar flow if not more and it's only set for 70%.
Got my self a Vortech QD three weeks ago and they are dead silent, not running it now on my DT just the XF150 Gyre.

I run 2 MP40's (one on either side) on my 8x2x2 SPS dominated tank, and they provide more than enough flow. Especially since the returns are in the middle of the tank adding additional flow.

I think you are on the right track with vortechs on the sides, maybe an MP60 on each side, and then two gyres on the back. If you are trying to keep your barebottom clean (that sounds funny), you could run the gyres on alternating mode and they would cycle water along the surface half the time and along the bottom the other half, and any detritus stirred up would stay suspended by the power of the MP60s.

That tank is awesome...

I am jealous about the barebottom with big powerheads, I love flow, and so do my corals, but my sandbed does not!
