Vortech VS. Tunze

What size tank ? I have both (2 MP40's on a frag tank and four 6205's on a 450). I love both of them and both have their pro's and cons. I went with the tunzes on the main display b/c I can hide them better than 2 large MP60's on either side of the tank (although I might end up adding some on the back of the tank).

get that flow going dude make that tank look like a sunami lol im undecided aswell but i might be leaning more towards 2 mp40's on my 120 i say mp's

Its a 150 gallon tank. 48x31.5x24

I've had 2 tunze on my 120 for many years but found the flow very focused... I added a mp40 a few months back and decided that 2 40's and 1 tunze is my preferred configuration.

Just like the type of flow better... only hope they last as long and have similar quality as tunze.

What ever looks better to you there really a even match IMHO both have great customer service and stand behind there products.... I personally like the looks of vortecs but there a even match when it comes to performance.... Tunze are nice that you can make a wave box and have fun with it.....;)

I agree with the looks of the vortecs, but when I had mine, I couldn't get use to the noise.
I traded the 2 I had for a pair of Tunze 6105's and a controller and couln't be happier.

The only thing is that Ive heard about alot of troubles with the design of the MP40.
Ive heard the design of the MP10/MP60s is better and has less problems. The other reason why I considered the MP60s is because it would be set so low that the energy consumption would be less. And because of it being on a constant low setting it would result in less ware and tare.

I agree that the mp40's run hotter & louder at full speed (I've gone through 2 wetsides also). Sounds like you're leaning towards 2 mp60's, I've heard that they worked out the kinks regarding the heat issue with the vents. If you ramp it down, that should take care of the noise issue.

id been running a tunze 6080 for a while with a 6045 just for a little extra flow. then came accross some mp40s and i have to say i like a combo of the two. the tunze is much more focused so it seems to churn then tank more (if thats the right word) and you can really get the water actually spinning in almost the whole tank.
But when you turn the mp40's on its amazing how much stuff is brought up from the tanks floor. I have alot of flow in my 90 (2 mp40s and the 6080 though the 6080 only runs 6 hours a day) and really like how clean its keeping everything.
The MP40s when aligned correctly do not make that much noise (i even have one with a dryside bearing starting to make noise and thats the only one i hear)...They make even less noise when you put them on the larger pane of glass (aka the back not the side)

on the new 120 im going to put my 3rd mp40 in and see how i like it, if i dont then it will be back to the 6080 and 2 mp40s. i think a mix and match is really a nice thing, though i think you could get away with a non controllable tunze and save the money for a battery back up with the vortechs.

Ive had one mp40 for just over a year and havent had to replace anything, Ive have another one that is used that was in service for 2 years+ that just needed a few things tightened up on the wetside and has run flawlessly since i got it. ive heard of others with problems but heard of alot more that have had no problems.
My tunze is close to 7 years old and runs well (is even missing a washer in the impeller and still plugs away)

In the past I had a combination of Tunze (6100) and Koralia pumps. I ran two 6100's and a few koralia pumps on my old 90g tank. I needed lots of powerheads to get the flow everywhere equally.

It became very tricky because the flow is so direct and strong, I would carefully position the pump such that the stream of water went just past my delicate acropora colonies, any closer and I'd blow off the flesh! Any further and they wouldn't have any flow at all! Ultimately you depend on bouncing the flow off of the walls in the aquarium and hope it disperses well enough.

With my new tank, a custom 48x30x24, I run a single MP60 pump on one side of the tank, aside from my return (which is dialed way down) this is the only flow in my system. I run the MP60 at about 65% in reef crest mode. This pump does a really good job at distributing flow everywhere in the tank. I was always VERY skeptical of the vortech pumps but now I understand why people like them so much. I bit the bullet with the new MP60 because it supposedly had fewer maintenance issues. So far so good!

Older thread but theres too many of these threads to start yet another. Still debating what to go with. Almost sprung for an MP60 but the one year warranty is pretty miserable, especially since my mp40 took a dive just after a year. Leaning Tunze at this point. Any thoughts on Tunze's controllable line from those who own them?

I have a 6055 on mine and love it. I have never owned a vortech but as long as I continue being happy with Tunze, I never will
