I am beginning to replace my current wavemaker with vortech's. I question is which would be better for my 120 gallon (24"x24"x48") with a bit of live rock and a mix of sps & lps. A couple of MP10 or MP40. Is the mp40 overkill? They can be turned down but if you use the MP40 and 1/2 speed why pay the extra price. The mp10 will pump more than 1500 gph and I now have a tunze 6100 which is 1600 gph and is too much no mater where you place or aim that powerhead. It either pounds all corals within 2 feet of the flow or creates sand storm if angled at the glass.

I would definitely do the Mp40's. I ran 2 on my 120g and it was not overkill at all.

The MP10 will not be enough for that sized aquarium. You'll definitely need an MP40 or two.

Agree - 2 MP40's - one on each side of tank will be ample. You can dial it back in the short term if it's too much. MP10's won't do much of anything for that size tank.

Thanks, I kinda thought it was going to go as MP40. I know I would need 2 of them or maybe 3 MP10 if I went that way. They would about the same price. For those who have a tank around my size. How is the Vortech on width. Not sure if I am phrasing that correctly. My current setup has force in front and it will carry the 4' length. But not carry to the sides since the movement is triangular away from the powerhead so the sides for feet vext to the powerhead becomes a dead zone. Because of this I have 7 units on a wavemaker pushing 850-1600 gph each angled everywhere. I like the clean, uncluttered look I hope the Vortech will do.

That is the nice thing about the vortechs, they have very wide flow patterns. With a 24" width tank, you should have no problem pushing water back and forth :)

Once you put 2 mp40's on the tank I doubt there will be any dead spaces. the flow going out creates a strong undertow across the sand and behind the rocks! It basically creates a figure 8 patter on each side of the tank where the middle of the 8 is the water going away from the pump and then the top and bottom of the 8 are the water going back toward the pump. you'll understand as soon as you hook one up! LOL
