I wanted to see what all the hype was about the WP's, so I picked up 2 of the WP60's last week to go in my 400 along with my 3 Vortech's.
PRICE - The Jebao's are a steal and are hands down, priced perfectly. The Vortech's are still over priced in my opinion
QUALITY - The wet side of the Vortech feels cheap, but the motor side feels heavy duty and it's high quality. The entire pump of the Jebao feels cheap too me.
LOOKS - The Vortech looks clean on the inside and I hate dealing with cord on the outside of the tank, but at least I can run it against the bottom of my canopy and make it look clean. The foot print of the Jebao is WAY too big and that cord in the water is hideous looking. I would rather deal with the cord on the outside than on the inside. The biggest reason because I have a euro braced tank and it's annoying that I can't tuck the cord against the glass nice and neat with the Jebao. It comes out towards the middle of the tank and then up and out of the water because of the euro brace, so it's very noticeable.
NOISE - My Vortech's are annoying and loud, but I'm okay with it for the most part because I have them ramp down to 30% in the evenings when I'm going to bed. People say the WP's are silent, but they are not, I can hear them humming all the time. It's not annoying like the Vortech's though.
FLOW - Now there are 2 different ways I can talk about this and this is ultimately what we want, right? So here it goes - The Vortech's don't even come close to the amount of water that comes out at the end of the cage when you compare it to the Jebao. The Jebao is MUCH stronger, but it's not as broad as the Vortech. Both pumps PUSH water out of the pump, but the Vortech does something that the Jebao does not, it pulls the water. When I stir up my sand bed, I can see the over tow and under of the Vortech pulling towards the pump. The water around the WP60 is almost dead. Now maybe this is because it's in a 30 wide, 32 tall tank? So in other words, the Jebao simply destroys Vortech's in terms of pushing water, but with the Vortech's you get that awesome over tow and under tow. I do love the fact that I can point the WP in any direction I want, I don't think you really need that feature with the Voretch's because they do have that pulling power.
PROGRAMABILITY - Jebao's are just okay. It's really hard to tell what W2 and W3 are really trying to do. The Vortech is about the same. You pick Reef Crest or Pulse, etc. The Vortech's are great because of the wireless capability and being able to anti sync. I got the controller for the 2 WP's to be able to anti sync but since the stupid cord is so short, it basically allows a 4 foot span, so I can't use it on my 8 foot long tank anyway. The dumb this is, is that 2 WP60's are WAY WAY to much for a 4 foot long tank, so the controller is pointless. The Vortech does have an advantage when you use it with the Apex. 7-9 am pulse, 9-11 am reef crest, 11-2 pm anti sync, ramp up, ramp down on the flow, etc, you get the idea. You can't do that with the Jebao, but if there was a way to by pass the Jebao controller and use the Apex to do that? You could create some pretty cool stuff with the Jebao's.
I do feel like the Jebao feels and looks cheap, but you get A LOT of bang for your buck Over all the Vortech is a better pump, but it should be a better pump for how much we have to pay for them. I was VERY surprised and PLEASED when I looked at how much I spent with these 2 Jebao's and what I actually got out of them. Yeah, I can't do the cool programming with them and I'm not concerned about my over tow and tow as much because I have my 3 Vortech's to make up for it, but it's an awesome pump for what you pay for.
I think if you have the cash to spend on the Vortech do, but if you don't, the Jebao will do just fine.
