Ok, so I have this over in the nano section, but I think it probably belongs here, so I'm only going to update this one moving forward. I'll put dates next to the post on the older ones so it makes a little more sense.

(08/08/15)As some of you know from checking out my BC29 build thread, I've been modding and tweaking the BC so much that it really doesn't resemble an AIO anymore. Most of this comes from my history of always doing a custom system and wanting to tinker to "make things better". So, I decided to break down do the BC29 and transfer it to a more custom system. Now, many would think "what's he talking about? The Reefer 170 isn't really a custom system." Now while I partially agree with that, I also think the reefer series allow for the most ease in adding customization's while starting off with what many of us would do anyway. Plus the aesthetics are just sexy.....I really like the look of the tank/stand.

So after mulling over the details and chatting with a few fellow members, I went with the reefer 170 over just building out my own system.

First, let me start by saying that the stand and tank both have some pretty serious weight to them. The stand is a tank, especially once you get it built, and I forgot how heavy starphire glass is. The stand and tank's instructions might leave a bit to be desired but anyone who's built up some Ikea furniture, or anything like that, should be fine. I'm actually pretty impressed with the quality of the whole kit, it shows some pretty good attention to detail and doesn't seem like they skimped on much (with the exception of the ATO reservoir.....1.5gal? come on guys.......).

After getting the stand built up, it was time to start breaking down the BC29. I had to break it down prior to setting up the tank and plumbing for the reefer170 due to space in my apartment. So I moved all the livestock to a combination of rubbermaid containers and buckets I use for tank maintenance. After getting everything out of the BC29, the race was on to get the 170 up and running as I wanted to minimize any temp/flow shock to the livestock. That all went like clockwork with the exception of me looking at the diagram backwards once when connecting the overflow and return plumbing.....but that was a quick fix.

So started filling the 170 and got it about 2/3 filled and realized that I didn't make enough fresh seawater to finish it off! Sigh......I thought I'd mixed up 15 Gal, but had only done 10. So I added my MP10 (yeah Soulpatch, traded back for now) and a heater to the tank, moved the LR and livestock into the display and fired up that part to try and keep everyone happy. In the meantime, I waited for more RO to fill up and then mix up more seawater.

BTW, I did a leak test on the plumbing before adding the LR/livestock to the tank......just in case anyone was wondering if I just "rolled the dice" :) .

So after waiting for more RO and mixing up the seawater......I finished topping off the tank and sump. Fired up the return pump and tweaked the "silent overflow" to get it pretty darn quiet. I can only really hear it when the mode changes on the MP10 and the water level moves around from where it was set when I dialed it in. So overall, pretty slick setup.

After that, setup the skimmer, dosing pumps, ATO (no I'm not using RS's I'm sticking with my Tunze), and lighting. All that went in like butter....so no issues. The only thing I haven't hooked up yet is my carbon/GFO reactor, but I'll probably get that installed sometime over the weekend.

So here's some "right after" pictures. I'll post some more now that it's settled down a bit later on.

And yes, that's a bit of cyano on the frag rocks......I swear those thing leach something fierce....but I do like them for growing out frags.

Oh, and this probably isn't final placement in the tank either. I'm going to have to "feel it out" to see where everyone will be happiest.

Anyway, I hope this info is at least mildly entertaining and feel free to comment as you like :) .

I'll be adding updates over time to share how things are going.

(08/19/15)Little update:

Well, the tank's looking pretty good, but now I get the the wonderful honor of mostly emptying my tank to re-level it. The carpet has compressed fully so now I have a measurement of how much shimming I need to do (almost a 100 year old house, so the floor isn't all that level). So that should be fun.....totally worth it though, for peace of mind.

Also, got the reactor hooked up with a little GFO and carbon, so here's some shots of the cabinet and a couple of new additions.

(09/20/15)Well, got back from vacation last night (2 hours late due to an in flight medical emergency which required us to divert to Punta Cana to get the passenger to a hospital).

So after an interesting flight back, I immediately checked on my tank, and my skimmer was sitting there "dead". I checked my Apex real quick to verify I had the outlet "on" (I checked it every day while away, so I didn't think I missed it, but you never know). It was good. So after a bunch of testing I pulled the skimmer, gave the pump a vinegar bath (it was due, it's been running for about 2 months) and cleaned the impeller and motor/pump housing.

Everything looked good, but there was a little build up, so I thought that might be binding the impeller. After re-assembly, powered it back up an nothing!......still dead. So I emailed both Skimz and Aquacave to see if I can get a new pump under warranty.

In the mean time, as I'm not one to sit around an wait while an important part of my filtration is down, I checked all the local LFS's to see if anyone had a skimmer I could pick up as a backup......nothing. So I ordered an SCA-302 for delivery Tuesday. Depending on how well it works out, it may become my primary and once I get the Skimz fixed, it might be my backup.

(09/20/15)Oh, and since I haven't posted any updated pics recently, here's how the "tenants" are doing:

From the looks of things, the acans are happier with the skimmer being offline for a week.....hmmmmm.

Thanks!

I like'm. I'm glad I'm getting back into the hobby and can pick them up MUCH cheaper that I could 12 years ago when I had my last tank.

Looks like the vendor is going to replace the pump and/or controller. I have to send both back so they can test. I think it's about time for me to start leaving a bit more nutrients in the water, especially seeing how the acans are "perking" up. I just have to figure out if I want to shut the skimmer down for part of the day, modify my water change frequency, or something else.

In the meantime, the SCA-302 arrived and I've got it up and running. It's got a arger footprint than the SN123 did, so had to rearrange some stuff in the sump.

So I guess we'll see how this goes.

Well, picked up a used ATI sunpower 6x24W today and hooked it up.

Just a "little" bit of a difference.....lol

I figure I had the Kessil @ 75% at it's highest point, so I set this guy to ramp for 1 hour in the AM to 60% and stay there for now. I'm going to play around with the dimming/timing later today or tomorrow. Just wanted to get a feel for the fixture.

One thing's for sure, it lights the whole display tank up more fully (to be expected of course) and showed me a few more aiptasia I need to kill off......

Well, next chapter....or update, if you will:

-ATI Sunpower conked out on me. 4 bulbs aren't lighting. Did some testing and I'm pretty sure it's the relay. So ordered 2 (figured I might as well replace both while I have it apart) and they'll take about a week to get here. Luckily I still have my Kessil, so that's back on and working like a champ. It's almost like the reef tank gods are hinting that I should stay with the Kessil :D

-Repaired pump for the Skimz skimmer came in. Installed and tested, everything works fine, so I guess we're good. They said it was build up on the shaft and I should clean it every 3 or so months. Well seeing as how it was only running for 2.5 months, I guess I need to clean it every 2. The other thing is that I did clean it in vinegar/water and test prior to sending it back, and it didn't help then. But whatever, I guess. It works now. On the up side, it's really kicking butt now too. Pulling much more "yuck" outta the tank than I remember.

Great looking tank. The Acans are awesome. Just curious are those some kind of bio balls in the sump?

Thanks!

Those are MarinePure biomedia balls. I added 2 quarts to the sump to give the pod's I have down there a home without having to worry about weird algae growth.

Figured I should update this thread since there's been some changes (good and bad).

First, I seem to have (or had at this point) a parasite or something "bugging" my acans. So I've dipped them and completed the second (of 3) interceptor doses on my tank (the dips revealed what I believe were black bugs). After this second dose, everything is starting to look much better, so I think I'm on the right track.

Secondly, I've removed the Gyre from the system and replaced it with 2 RW-4's connected to a JBwave controller. This seems to be supplying better flow for the tank and allows me more "space" to put frags/coral than the Gyre did).

Oh, and on another note, the ATI dimmable fixture that was causing me issues is still not working and driving me a little crazy. I've replaced both relays, the controller, and all the connections (wiring) and it's still out. I'm going to swap the ballasts around this week. and see if maybe I actually blew 2 at the same time.....that's about all that's left. (wonder if I can sell it as refurbished if I replaces EVERYTHING inside it...lol)

I'll add some pics tonight when I get home.

It's been a while, so I figured I'd throw in some updates on the tank.

I went ahead and picked up a WAV starter kit over the black friday sales (primarily just because I wanted to play around with them). I installed 1 of the PH's about 3 days ago and waited a bit to see how the tank responded. After getting the beta firmware from Neptune to fix the pulsing/33% issue it worked like a charm.

Today I added in the second PH and have it fully set in inverse mode of the other one. Things still look a little chaotic even at only 15%-20% on all "modes" but it may not be too bad. I'm going to let it ride for a day or two and see how the tank responds. What I do know if that if I keep both WAV's in the tank, I probably don't need the one little Koralia PH I have sweeping across the bottom to push all the detrius to one side as they kicked up a ton that I didn't even know was in the tank. Guess I'll be swapping out filter socks more often!

Anyway, here's a few pics of the tank now. I've also changed the rockwork significantly and I think it looks better now.

So I thought I'd throw this out to see what kind of feedback I get.

Some of you know that while I really do like the Red Sea Reefer I have, I've been thinking pretty hard about switching to a shallow reef. I've got a list of pro's and cons and thought I'd share them:

Pro's
-Shallow reef just looks cool
-Allows me to have a longer tank without increasing the volume, which for me equals not adding weight on a second floor apartment in an older building. This would give the fishies more room to "stretch their legs".
-Much easier to clean and get to everything when arranging frags/colonies/rocks/etc.
-Can set up a nice little waterfall easily if I want to (jury's still out on this)

Cons:
-Have to switch out tanks. Which I've done before but it's not only a pita but it also disturbs all the inhabitants
-Loss of "space" to mount PH's and such. Can you imagine me running WAV's in a 12" tall tank?
-$$$$ have to buy a new tank, stand, sump (at least) and I'm getting tired of spending money on stuff I don't really need to.

At first I was going to go custom and get a 30-36 x 18 x 16 but I can't justify dropping over a grand on just the tank (for one so small) and then another 500-700 on a stand.

Then I started looking for "off the shelf" tanks that I could work with. If I go this route, I'll probably go with the Deep Blue Professional rimless RR 34Gal tank (36x18x12). The only problem there is I think 12" might be more shallow than I really want. But, it's a compromise between tank size and cost. I can get the tank and stand for this delivered for under $500.

So anyway, that's the thinking I've been doing recently. Any thoughts or ideas anyone (constructive please

First off, Merry Christmas everyone! And if you don't celebrate Christmas, then happy holidays!

Well, I figured that since I had 3 days off (kinda) I'd go ahead and make the changes I've been planning for my tank. I'm holding off on and major change swaps/upgrades for now.

Kessil and ATI are out and a Nanobox Duo is in for lighting.....and so far, I'm pretty darn impressed.

Skimz skimmer is out and a Lifereef SVS3-24 is in. I'm still trying to figure out some tweaks on the skimmer, but so far, so good.

Neptune WAV's are bye bye. I probably could have gotten by with using just one at about 1%-5%, but that just seemed silly to me. So now I'm back to my MP10 for now. Deciding if I'll get another one for the other side of my overflow (the one I have is mounted on the back of the tank, between the overflow box and the glass) or if I had it right the first time and I go back to the RW-4's.

I'm going to clean the tank today and then I'll post some updated pictures tonight or tomorrow. Between Christmas and me trying to sell my large cabinet humidor and arrange local pickup for it, today's going to be a busy day.

Just made the changes to the skimmers plumbing. Now I can get the filter sock tray out without moving it and the output is over by the return pump instead of being right on top of the input pump.

Had to build a little eggcrate stand for the skimmer to sit on to get the output line over the baffles between the skimmer chamber and the return pump chamber.
