I bought a wall hammer a while back that has a good amount of old skeleton attached..basically I'm wondering of the hammer will re-grow over the old skeletal structure, or should I just lop it off to save some room?

Dang, you're on the ball today! Lol
That's been my thought so far..but space is limited in a 55gal..

you can safely trim the skeleton, dont get too close though. I have done it all the time to give myself a better base for attaching.

Some species of "walling corals" in the Euphyllia family can be cut down to size if need be but it will leave exposed skeleton and if done improperly can lead to disease. So if you do it,quick iodine dip just to be sure

I don't think I expressed myself clearly lol...there is about 6-8 inches of dead skeleton..I was just wondering if the flesh will re-grow over it..I'm not looking to frag it or cut the bottom of the skeleton..thank for the replies though!

Actually, I think I read your reply incorrectly..so just iodine dip if I do decide to trim it down? Even if there is still an inch or two of skeleton left before getting to live coral?

Excellent! Thats what I was looking for..I just wasn't too clear in the original post haha, thank you!
