Hi

I just brought a purple hammer wall I don't know how to place it? Should I put it on top of a rock with one side touching or leave space between the walls and let the sides not touch anything?

I am just a little confuse I want to give it room to grow and expand.

thanks.

Leave the sides not touching anything. Give it room to expand. It will build it's own skeleton as it grows.

+1!

How big is this hammer? Give it a good 2" of space all around, you'd be surprised how long those tentacles can reach especially at night. And like Ritter said, make sure the sides don't touch. Just let the base sit on something. Give it low-medium flow, like a very slight breeze, the euphyllias love a current like that! Too much flow could rip the flesh off the skeleton as a heads up and with the majority of corals, start low and then move your way up. I say medium lighting would be a good choice.

Hammers can put out long stinger tentacles if they need to, so they can kill things not apparently close to them. They lose in battles with anemones. But they get along well with other euphyllias, like frogspawn and torch, and can be placed so their tentacles touch one another. Don't put them in areas of strong flow. High flow can pull the flesh of the skeletons. Low to moderate flow and moderate lighting. They can take higher light, but need to be acclimated slowly to it, although they do not need it to prosper.

As for the comment with the torch, that might not be 100% true. I have personally witness some torches stinging frogspawn so I wouldn't be surprised if it stung a hammer. There was an article on euphyllias on either reefbuilders or another site, said the same thing. It is possible though, but be careful.

thank you, I superglue it down, but it is facing the front of the tank but seem to be puffing up. but if I come very close to the tank, he will close down. I need to post a pic :)

Yea, torch corals are not supposed to do well with other euphyllias. I was wrong about them. It is the hammer/frogspawns that can be really close to one another. I personally have had torch corals near enough to frogspawn and hammer for them to touch tentacles with one another, but never with any major battles between the corals. Perhaps keeping a torch near another Euphyllia is like a "reef compatible with caution", a definite maybe. Good article by James Fatherree here: Aquarium Corals: Corals of the Genus Euphyllia — Advanced Aquarist | Aquarist Magazine and Blog
