Thanks for your input diesel, did you have the dry rock one or the live rock? I'm just worried about my fish as I bought some pretty expensive clowns lol

Picked it up at the airport the same day they shipped it.
Keep your fish in QT as you have to do that anyways if you have heart for this hobby.

Okay, I got the dry rock and cycled my tank completely 3 months ago. The bacteria is a new thing that I'm dealing with, no bad parameters going on.

Try using h202 it got rid of it in my tank

Quick update, water has actually gotten worse! Not so much stringy bacteria on the rocks anymore, mostly on back wall and lots of cloudiness that you Can actually see the vortexes pushing it around the tank. Totally bizarre. It's been about 4 years since I set up my first tank, but I definitely do not remember this part lol

it is fully atypical in reef tanks that use standard live rock and no carbon dosing. Still a great challenge to work with since this type of rock above is used by many.


Time for oversized UV temp sterilization + full pre removal of the offender

Pretty scared to use a uv sterilizer but it looks like I might have to do that pretty soon. This water is milky as it's ever been and we're starting to get on the one month mark of it not going away

When I had a bacteria bloom it took about 6 weeks to clear

any tank that uses a UV sterilizer wont be harmed, is ok to use. our tanks don't support the planktors very well anyway, filtration etc

My tank looked it's worse right before it cleared up. It was so cloudy it looked like there was smoke in the water, within a week it was clear. Hopefully yours will do the same.

I'd rather not use a sterilizer and let it run its course Brandon. Not a fan of them.

Yeah, I think the best way is for it to clear up on its own. Still looks the same today. Hoping one night I'll wake up and it'll be clear as day

of things allowed to run course (algae vs bacteria) the bac tend to do better, more internal competition based on whatever time frames and variables interact. with algae its a terrible idea tho, since you don't have tons of fish and corals being choked out its no big deal here, seems like the natural maturation for this kind of rock. Is it worth it in the end im curious, I hadn't known about this potential until your thread and the other one linked w similar. if the rock is ultra eco friendly that's one reason to use it for sure. I have zero problems for 15 yrs on my naturally sourced live rock purchases, and that's opposite of eco friendly agreed.

Quick update, seems to be doing a TINY bit better. Still can see the floating clouds of smoke but they are more defined which means it's clearing a bit. Will keep updated to those who have messages me. Looks to be it is just part of the rock process

Wanted to bump this and see if there was an outcome...

I am using caribsea "life rock" which I know is different.. but I'm having a very similar experience... tank cycled in about 5 weeks... it's incredibly cloudy and white stringy slimy globs on glass and silicone seams...

Crystal clear now, nothing I tried worked for it so I just let it sit and it cleared up.
