im interested in getting a female mandarin to go with my male. i was wondering if it was possible to put my red and green mandarin with a spotted. or does it need to be another red and green? and does size matter like it does with clowns? is there any other aspects to consider when choosing a mate for a male mandarin? my pod population is rediculously high so food isnt an issue.

they need to be the same species in order to mate, but you can have a mated pair of each assuming you can feed them enough pods. id suggest doing a little more homework as these are delicate fish that have very specific dietary needs. that being said it will be much easier for you to get a female splendidus vs getting a female picturatus. its very hard to sex the picturatus due to not much dorsal spine height difference. the splendidus have huge male spikes vs the females. you may be able to special order one from ORA through your LFS but theyll be expensive. also you may just order a pair of the type you dont have already as the one you have will not accept another male of the same species.
