Want to add a Blue Throat Trigger

Hello all,

I would like some input on whether or not I should pick up a Blue Throat Trigger my LFS has right now.

My tank is over a year old. All parameters are good. I run a protein skimmer and an algae turf scrubber and a lot of Seachem Matrix in bags layered in the sump for filtration. 120 gallon in wall with 55 gallon sump.

Current stock is :

2 - Oscellaris clows
2 - blue chromis
4 - Bangii cardians
1 - Yellow tang
1 - Pacific Blue Tang
1 - Lawnmower blenny
1 - Coral Beauty
1 - Falco hawkfish
2 - Large BTA
2 - Leather Toadstools
2 - Kenya Tree (and about 10 small drop offs LOL)
2 - blue mushrooms
10 - blue/red leg hermits
3 - Cerith Snails
1 - Large Coral Banded Shrimp

Any and all comments and experience with the Blue Throat Triggers are welcome.

I have a pair in my Red Sea S650 which is slightly bigger than your system but you will be fine

They are very active so be prepared for some rock relocation, mine live in a cave under the rocks.

Lol... Start at about 21 mins. in the video. You might have to soak the tube in vinegar. I'm keeping my Bubble King. :) He doesn't know how to get in it either! Thought I was watching @2una (Red Sea main pump!) when he started with the fast hands lol! Why would soaking the tube in vinager...

Just my opinion but I feel that’s a bit on the small side. They can still easily get to 7-8”, I think, and are active swimmers. They’re a pelagic species of Trigger that really like space. I’d say a 72” minimum would probably be better.

LFS just let me know that they have 2 small to medium Blue Throats coming in this morning. My only concern is that I have no found much information on whether or not the Blue Throats tend to bother or even eat Bubble Tip Anemones. I have 2 large green BTAs and just picked up a smaller Rose BTA and don't want them hurt. They are pretty much my favorite things in the tank.

Has anyone seen or have experience of a Blue Throat Triggerfish and a BTA?

I don’t think they would harm an anemone. Your hermits and maybe any shrimp would be more at risk. Clams would also be iffy

The triggers shouldn't bother any of your corals. I've kept a blue throats trigger in the past and it didn't bother anything. It did meet it's death by jumping out though. I currently have a niger and picasso trigger in a 180 gallon tank. I can not have a cleanup crew and the only issues I've had is if I put a small frag in the tank they will pick it off the plug and I usually don't find it again. Larger frags are no problem.

Got him in quarantine last night. He was a little bigger than I thought so I set up a 45 hex as a qt as I thought the 10 gallon I usually use seemed a bit small. He looks healthy. Hiding a lot but he did eat some mysis shrimp tonight.

If you have the funds I would find a female asap and introduce them at the same,e time, your male will hold considerably better colors with a female in the tank.

Congrats on your new addition. I love Blue Throat Triggers and miss the pair I had. Very personable fish.

Great fish I have a pair with a similar mix no issues
