Want to replace asm g-4 protein skimmer

Recently my protein skimmer has been letting a ton of bubbles into the display its been in use for eight years + I'm going to reefapalooza and am looking to pick one up over there.

Anyone have a suitable replacement for the asm g-4?
I may also get a sump, but the protein skimmer is most important atm.
I current have a pro clear wet-dry 300 without prefilter.

I had ASM G3 skimmer, just recently switched to the bubble magus curve 7 and love it. Have it on a 120 system and it pulls a lot of sludge.

How big is your tank?

Why not get things working with the G4? It's still a fine skimmer....sounds like the air-intake might be slightly blocked, which has the effect of increasing the water flow through the skimmer, bringing more bubbles with it. Even if you have to replace the whole pump, it's probably worth the repair. (The skimmer body doesn't really go bad if you don't physically break it somehow.)

Why wait for a reef show to replace your skimmer? What does your LFS carry? (Do you have a LFS?)

I agree completely. Used a G4 for many years. Only replaced it because I want to go with an external unit and free up some sump space. Figure out why it's suddenly spitting bubbles - should be easy enough, not a complicated thing the skimmer.

The g-4 the neck gets sludgy almost every day I clean it with a brush weekly. During the winter this is harder to do. As I do it outdoors.

I have cracked the body and repaired it with silicone. My sump is a very tight space due to the external Sedra pump. To remove the filter pad from the wet-dry, I have to remove the neck and skimmer cup pretty annoying. When doing this, I shift stuff around, and I sometimes make it leak more bubbles like yesterday when I posted this... it also is pretty dang noisy but the tank is down stairs away from everyone at night.
Dont get me wrong its pulling green crap out nonstop but the microbubbles lately have been leaking from everywhere. Also some water leaks here and there.

I was either going for an

I figured I could grab it tomorrow at reefapalooza I haven't checked what my lfs carries as most of the time it would need to be ordered, and i can get it online my self quicker lol

For what it is worth I have had Great luck with my Skimz sm201 AC Powered skimmer...

Most of the better brands have great performance in a smaller package then the old asm skimmers. That being said that is a VERY GOOD and reliable skimmer..

RAP (NY anyway) doesn't have much equipment for sale, and any equipment that is there will mostly go on Saturday. Sunday, last year, had all of the leftover sumps from only 1 manufacturer that were enormous or tiny. The sump company that was there actually makes the sump you have for Aqueon. They sell different models than Aqueon but only sell to the public at the shows. No skimmers except the Icecaps, which I don't know if they were for sale.

Last year was my first time and I thought it would be more equipment-based, some fish, ect... It was basically all frag setups on Sun.

If you're going, I would suggest getting there as early as possible on Sat because things go fast and they don't ration stuff for both days. It's first come, first served.

If you can open the air more and skim wetter, it'll keep the neck clean and be easier to clean all the way around. You'll fill the cup quicker too....something to keep in mind.

Just remove the wet-dry if you can. At least skip the pad and remove the bio-balls.

As long as you have a "normal" amount of live rock, you don't need the balls.

I see a lot of answers without anyone asking you a few critical question, what is your bio-load (heavy, medium, light)? Do you feed much? Do you also run filter socks? What about carbon dosing? All of those do play a role in making a decision on the next skimmer purchase you will get for the long haul.

Another one is do you plan on upgrading your tank anytime soon?

i tried making it skim wet and just cant get the sludge down been trying for 2 months now.

Thank you i wasn't sure if i was ready to remove the bioballs lol didn't wanna throw off anything. My baffle is broken in the sump so the bioballs stay submerged no matter what. I def want to keep the sump maybe at chaeto in it some how.

i thought the pad acts as a filter sock no?

At RAP a lot of the fraggers will sell nice equipment make sure to read all of the signs on there tables. The vendors will sell some of the equipment but pickup is on Sunday PM.
