Have you had any luck with this? I was considering doing this in the future. It might be messy though. Blade up under the rim to cut the caulk enough to pull the rim away and then spend a lot of time cleaning it up.
Hey not sure if your still thinking about it but I actually just finished setting up my first saltwater tank and I bought a 28 gallon nano cube. My hood malfunctioned almost immediately so instead of fixing the stock light I decided to go rimless myself. There are a few threads on taking the rim off on various forums. It is actually pretty easy. I kept the sump on mine so i used a small hand saw to cut the plastic rim parallel to the sumps false wall on each side. Then I made a third cut in the middle of the bow front to make 2 halves of the rim. A hair dryer will help loosen the caulk making it easier to pull the rim off. Be careful when using a knife to score and loosen caulk under the rim it can scratch the glass. After I scored the caulk I used a hair dryer to heat it up and as i pulled the left half came right off in one piece. The other side took a little more scoring and heating before it came off, but all in all it wasn't hard and took about 2 or 3 hours. The hardest part is cleaning the leftover silicon off of the glass. About an hour to get the rim off and another 1 or 2 to scrap off the mess.
