Don't get digital USB microscopes. They are crap.
The Amscope from Amazon seems to have the same design as the popular Bresser microscope for children, which is decent. One flaw is that is has a 100x objective for 1000x magnification which you will never ever use (needs immersion oil).

Edit: forget what i wrote. I checked the description. That microscope comes with 4x 10x and 40x objectives and 10x and 25 eye pieces. That is a great choice. Just never use the 25x ocular and you have a decent microscope

Thanks for the idea! I hadn't thought about this, but I have a lab grade microscope, and an algae problem! Time to check it out when I get home

I highly recommend a mechanical stage if possible.
I got one with a mechanical stage for under $120.

I went with a 40x - 2000x.

I also "recommend" a proper condenser for darkfield, stereo ocular, and wide field eye pieces, but if the microscope is only needed for algae identification, nothing of that is necessary.
Sure my microscope can make great fotos, but it also cost a lot more, and for algae it is overkill.

Fist one is contaminated phytoplancton. Second is a tiny jellyfish.
