War stories of reefing

I can second the earlier posts on clowns. I had a pair of Perculas & the much smaller female (not much more than an inch long) would savagely attack my hand whenever it came within 12" of their anemone. She would specifically target that soft web of skin between thumb & forefinger and more than once drew a little blood.

I was curious, so one day I put my hand in with an offering of her favourite fresh food. She completely ignored the tasty meal and went straight for my hand. I still loved her though!

I was going to talk about lionfish stings and green moray bites, but after reading about electrocution and flesh eating bacteria, I'm going to pass!

Lol. Those morays give a bad bit though with all that bacteria in their mouth

Morning everyone, it 2 am here. Lol im not doing well and need to crash. Very good thread. An old president of our local reef club once scratched his finger on a rock and poated pictures of a very bad infection and he was in bad shape.
I really need to sleep now but Brandon, please do not underestimate the strenght of palytoxin or how often reefers get extremly sick from it. I know, i was given last rites and almost died from it. Four years latter still have numerous, serious medical issues from it. Im not complaining, im ok where im at but it changed my life forever. Fact. My story went viral worldwide. The CDC in Atlanta keeps in contact w me and give out my phone number to palytoxin victims, w my approval. You would not believe the people that have contacted me. Not only from the CDC but ones who found my story on line while looking for palytoxin info after going to the hospital for it. we all do it but, NEVER PUT YOUR HANDS IN A TANK WITHOUT GLOVES! you may just save a limb and not even know it. Really need to sleep but google my nick and palytoxin and you will still find my story four years latter. After it happended, 38 pages would pop up.
Be careful and peace all
Tommy

We had a very large gold stripe maroon clown pair at the store for a while. That female was the meanest thing I've ever encountered. Every time I went into the tank for a customer I got hit. She drew blood a few times too. I still have a scar from the worst one that I show customers that are contemplating maroons.
And my friend wonders why I don’t want to own clowns of any colour.

I own a pair of clowns and they know that as soon as the water stirs up at the top that its feeding time. So if I don't feed them and just stick my fingers/hand in the water then they will sometimes softly nip me because they think I'm food but then they stop when they realize its just my hand, besides that and several cuts from handling aquariums that's all the war I've felt. But maybe its because I'm still new to the hobby. :)

The worst part was when the dr stuck a huge needle into the wound to see if any of the pockets of my hand had been infected. Of course I'm watching him do it... (Luckily hadn't spread)

OUCH!!! Another good reason to wear the thick rubber gloves. Glad you recovered. That does not look like fun.

My heater was going in and out and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it so it was also not connected to the glass of suction cups had come off I figured I would stick my hand in there and try to adjust it and see what the problem was mind you this is behind live rock well I got my hand in there and decided to grab it and as I was grabbing it I was getting shot and I couldn't figure out what I was getting shocked by because there was nothing wrong with a fish then it started setting me even more until it got to the point where I fell on the floor hand came out my wife comes up it says are you okay so I then unplug everything get the heater out and realize that the glass around the heater was all broke and bits were all over the fish tank and the coil was live in the water so from now on I learned my lesson lol

I almost electrocuted myself reaching into my Rough Neck. Earlier I had received a small shock from the top of the heater I had in there. In my infinite wisdom I deduced the heater had a short in it so when I went back I of course unplugged the heater. The problem was I never considered it was the cheap *** powerhead flopping around in there that had a broken cord. Fortunately for me my fist was closed around a four cup measuring cup & I didn't get in too deep. When it hit me I just kind of flopped out, fell on the floor, heart racing a mile a minute. From that day forward everything gets unplugged.

I was at work and my mom was babysitting my daughter and I get this horrifying call blowing up my phone mind you I work at an airport so it's very hard for me to answer the phone when I'm on the ramp so I call back and ask why are you blowing up my phone what's wrong what happened and she says your tank is leaking all over the living room is flooded help the fish flopping around what do i do what do I do luckily I had another tank to put them in until I got home but my 55 gallon wasn't cracked the scene where the silicone was released or was old something and sprung a leak all over my living room on my carpet everywhere it took a week to clean up the fish that I saved and put in another tank until I got one when I finally did get a brand new tank to put them in they ended up getting it because of the constant change and I lost all but three of them and I had a total of 16 fish it was pretty heartbreaking the three that survived were the biggest of them all

My Maroon was also very mean, If I would put a new coral in, he would knock it off the rock, I finally took him to the LFS, got tired of being bit

My black maroon female was drawing blood on my hand and fingers every time I put new corals in or did some maintenance. I sold it after put her in the sump.

I promise I wasn't underestimating, only quantifying it compared to vib. I too keep paly's and am clean with them, but have far more concern about vib in small cuts. agreed on the acute danger of palytox if encountered. I remember your threads

It's def scary dealing with poisonous polyps. I have a nice one in my tank and every time I deal with it I wash my hands immediately. You only get poisoned if it gets in a cut, mouth and eyes right?

Or inhaled. That has happened when people boil rocks trying to get rid of things on the rock...

Plenty of cuts, scrapes, and electrocutions, but my personal worst is 3 lionfish stings to the hand while cleaning algae. Blew up like a balloon. Had a co worker get bit by a 1.5 ft mappa puffer once, he was lucky though and didn't do to much damage.
