Some of you that read my tank thread know I recently had a battle with aefw and red bugs and successfully won using Bayer insect killer as a coral dip. Using QT and Bayer dipping I have completely removed the coral pests from my tank. I did not have one coral loss from the Bayer dip and my sps corals look better than ever. I would highly recommend Bayer as the best coral dip out there
But...
I noticed recently my mandarin was getting thin. I checked my sump and my pod population is gone. I also found a dead emerald crab in the bottom of my tank. My theory is that too much residual Bayer from dipping so many corals killed my pod population. I'm ordering pods to boost the population and I've changed water several times. My other life in the tank looks great and is doing well. I don't have any shrimp but I suspect I would have killed them too. My snails look fine and the tank is full of asterinas and mini brittle stars but no pods. I see my mandarin picking at the rocks so I'm sure some survived but the population took a huge hit. I haven't seen any of the larger amphipods in my sump.
Make sure to rinse the corals very well after using Bayer dip to dilute the residue. In hindsight I should have run massive amounts of carbon also to filter out the Bayer residue. Also, had I known I would have ordered pods sooner to repopulate the tank.
I still say Bayer is the best dip out there and wouldn't use anything else but will use it with a little more caution from now on.
