Was Reefapalooza NY Worthwhile?

Overall I found it semi-disappointing, there are better and nicer corals online.

A huge plus was meeting a fellow R2R member in-person and talking in depth with the people at Polyp Labs, Reef Nutrition, and eKoral.

In some cases, Kessil last year and Red Sea this year, the people working the booths aren't that knowledgable and can only quote their marketing sheets.

I'll go next year if I'm meeting a fellow R2R member, otherwise I'll probably pass.

The show seems to favors the beginner or guys trying to get a particular coral for $20 off.

Chicago sounds like It maybe worth attending next year, Inaugural event. Chicago has some entertaining vendors;Wacky . Its the Equipment demos and seeing what the future has to offer, Freebies and Swag are always welcomed.

I went for the first time this year. I only have a FOWLR tank at this time but being able to meet the vendors is a good opportunity for someone new in the hobby. Your able to speak to them one on one and get real answers on corals, dry good and any additional questions you might have. I went on Saturday, I do have to say it was really packed trying to move around some of the booths to see products. The overall experience is good for someone trying to meet and learn more of corals, dry good, and new stores to shop at outside the venue. You also get to me other reefers and build a connection. Everyone from the attending and booths are all friendly people. If your a long time reefer, it’s a great place to meet up and just experience the event all together with fellow reefers.

The raffles are fun as well, it was $20 for a raffle sheet of 26 subs. I bought $40 worth and I went home with a Hanna PHEP+ and a Tunze ATO 3155. Someone next to me won a Aqueon proflex sump model 3, they didn’t need it so they sold it to me for $100. I must say I think I left winner with the products I won and bought.

I would recommend at least giving it a try if you never went. My opinion I had a great time.

Great for the beginning reefer no doubt. Also for acquiring SPS corals for I find not many LFS in our area have quality corals. There seems to be a reluctance of the LFS to accept SPS frags from reefers who are past the frag stage, have separate frag tanks and are trimming their corals that grow to big... there are a few. The show is good to pick up SPS without the shipping charges even for the people with a few years experience under their belt. Real "old salts" not so much.

I have to start off with a brief disclaimer....that I attend 5-6 major trade shows annually for work and most are huge and higher end. So my overall view may be a bit slanted. And another disclaimer, this is NOT to take away for ALL the volunteers and literally countless hours it takes to pull something like this off. So my hat is off to all those that make RAP possible, and Greg is correct, you can only please half of the people half of the time -Bobby Dylan! Lastly, this is coming from an ole school 18+ year hobbyist that likes it "the way it used to be", so take all of this FWIW.

To that end, to me, it was a bit anti-climatic. This was my first ever reefing trade show and my expectations were a bit high in full transparency. This is not to say the show was not good per se, but I just thought it was going to be much larger.

Radom thoughts. I wanted to go for many reasons. My first reefing show, see Greg Carroll's talk, check out some manufacturers and rub some elbows with them, and see if I could grab a couple of SPS frags that I've been pining for. Greg's talk was awesome, and I found out through a show of hands, that I am the only one still running MH....lol. Found dry goods and equipment stuff to be up to what I thought. BUT I must say the biggest turnoff was the coral vendors. It just came off to me as one big flea market setup hawking frags, some new frags and others with these fancy names demanding high $$$. I'm so surprised at how many people sell frags and corals now. It just seems like every Tom, Dick and Henry are in the business to push high priced goods onto hobbyist. Long gone are the days of a typical "frag swap". I went around to many of these booth kinda laughing at all the "shaggy dog is the next red planet" type nonsense when referring to SPS's and all other corals. It just makes me even more go back to basics and enjoy keeping simple stuff like slimmers, millis, etc.

Also, the location is absolutely horrible IMHO. Traffic, lack of nice hotels, lack of decent restaurants. I mean I think RAP can find a better home then being buried in some of the most congested part of NJ. Maybe Mohegan Sun, Providence, White Plains, just a few random thoughts on location....AGAIN in my opinion.

My absolute favorite was stopping by the RAP both and spending an hour or so meeting Greg and Ben for the first time and talking ole school reefing. Two awesome guys and been on the hobby for decades and I simply could relate to them and their thoughts on the hobby. Even met Ryan from BRS there and we talked for a while and reminisced about the old days of Reef Chili being sold on eBay, his old 2-Part Solutions.com web site and his Maxijet MOD's. And even told him I missed the days we simply exchanged emails before he got famous....lol. And really wish I know ReefBum was going to be at the show. Would have liked to see Keith to say hello.....miss see the longtimer TOTM dudes.

Ok, ok, ok, a bit winded on my post I know. Did I like the show, yes. Will I go back again, yes. Do I like the RAP concept vs. MACA, yes but maybe things are getting a bit diluted and time for a merger of sorts????? My one suggestion is why can't they spread out the trade show floor so it's not as noisy and elbow crowded. That space is double the size and could have easily spread things out???

Anyway, hats off to ALL the RAP gents that pulled it off and their passion to keep people engage in the hobby!

I'm noticing a trend here. So it seems like making it a different state every year would be good exposure to hobby, while allowing those locals nearby the opportunity to miss it.

@turfster26 you actually were not alone, one guy told me later he used MH too, but didn't raise his hand. Well actually, it was his girl that told me if I recall. He left you out in the cold! LOL

I live 2 hours from RAPNY in the Poconos. Stores are very limited here and I like getting to check things out in person. What makes it worth it is hitting up restaurants with real food. I haven't had any bad food in the Poconos, but I've only found one place that has really good food. I think it's worth the day trip for me, but I'm not going to jump through hoops to get there.

Its the only show near the New England area that I know of. My drive is 4 hours but I stay over.. I like seeing the corals and not having to ship them.
as far as other equipment most is familiar stuff, did not see any big discounts. Not many samples either. Went to one lecture which was well presented but rather basic, I will probably skip next year.
Man, you need to check out Frag Farmers market in CT, held in March every year. I've never been to RAP or the other big ones, but FFM is killer.

for me last year was my 1st ever reefing show, and it was RAP NY.
I enjoyed it to the MAX! been there for the 2 days FULL! TIME!!
talked to so many people, met so many people I've been following in Youtube or forums.

I can't say nothing about this year, but a show like this would do wonders for the hobby around here in the Middle East.
but it would be nice to see it goes bigger in the size of the venue, so more people can walk around without going into a traffic jam of people standing in the middle of the hallway between vendors.

I wish I could've made it for this year show.
but I am putting my all hopes to make it to MACNA Las Vegas.

some people don't know how lucky they are! believe me.

Its funny that we came to a similar conclusion on the show. I'm going to guess we are not alone here on this. For people that have been in the hobby for a short time they likely just don't see it or notice how the selling of corals/frags has changed over the years. Topic for another day of course.

I have to agree that the location is horrible for anyone traveling more than like 30 min away. However, I do realize affordable convention centers around the NYC area are pretty limited. That being said, having the show not in the middle of the summer would be a huge help with traffic. So I think the location is workable if you change the date to spring winter or fall and not summer.

I get that you can't please everyone with these events but criticism is important and should be valued so the show can always be improved. And I think we all appreciate the efforts put forth to make it happen. Obviously there are things outside of the show organizer's control that can not be fixed (Coral price gouging and such).

We always listen to criticism and take it to heart. You hit on a lot of the reasons that the show is what it is.

I missed this year as I just moved my tank to the new house.... (that was fun)... I'll go next year to browse again. I really liked seeing stuff in person vs pictures online, blue light saturated or not.

SPS world has gotten insane, with 20 of the same piece being named 20 different things all selling for stupid prices.
In other news, I heard from a friend and cannot validate, also not sure the vendor, but supposedly there was a table dipping stuff AT the show before giving it to people; sounded like there was a ton of fresh cut stuff that was just thrown on plugs the day before, and other pieces that probably came out of the ocean just a few days prior based on how freshly cut they looked. Again not my own eyes, just what I heard.

First time for me i drove from Queens NY Get to see a lot of cool stuff and I pick up some nice frags to add to my tank so all in all i had a great time thought it would be more fish but was happy all in all, lets see what happens next year

I had a blast as usual! Ready to go back now! :p
