Hi there,

I've done something silly !!

I put my filter sock in the washer and used washing liquid, and put it back in the tank when it dried. My LFS just told me I should have never done that.

I don't have any livestock in the tank (it has been cycling for 10 days now) so I don't see any adverse effect of it yet. The only thing I know is that the skimmer went crazy when I put back the filter sock, but I didn't notice it until much later.

I've just removed the filter sock, and, now, I need to know what should I do to get things right? What should I take care of before introducing fish in the tank?

I'm not really inspired by the idea of changing all the water and starting over.

Thank you all.

FYI here is the background story

Use carbon it should take care of whatever chemicals you have introduced to the tank.

I wouldnt worry too much about it, just throw it in the wash for an extra rinse cycle or two and you should be fine.

I usually get a mesh bag and put some carbon in it, tie it up, then rinse it with some rodi water, it then put it in a high flow area in my sump for about. This will suck most contaminates out of the water.

There is a good video brs put out about carbon. Which does tests about what carbon is best check that out if you want some information on what carbon is all about after you watch that you will always have carbon on hand.

What do you think about REEF-SPEC Carbon?

I live in France, and we have limited choices with regard to reef equipment supplies.

Reef spec carbon is a good product. Like others mentioned, wash in bleach then air dry. I actually started using oxiclean and then throw the socks in the dryer. Works great.

Put some carbon in the tank for a week or so, and it will probably be good.

When I wash my socks I use 3 caps of bleach, when washing about 12 socks. Then soak them in some water with a cap full of seachem prime for a couple of hours, then let them dry.

The prime is not needed, but I do it because it would pick at the back of my brain about using bleach

Just put in for a rinse cycle, it will be fine. Liquid autowasher detergent contains surfactants and they are not harmful.
