So I was at one of my LFS, and I was told that I should wash all my Bio Media in my reef tank periodically to let 'new bacteria grow' and get rid of the old bacteria...I'm pretty sure nothing has changed in bacterial evolution in the 10 years I have been out of the trade, but is this a thing now? It used to be you put things like bio balls and Marine Pure in and left them alone to do their thing, unless they got scummed up by detritus or something due to bad mechanical filtration before hand.

I usually give them a shake in the old tank water during a water change. If not they tend to get pretty nasty... for me its just about removing the junk that builds up...

This is what I'm used to, the LFS was talking washing them completely using tap.

There are protozoa and other predators of nitrifying bacteria that will automatically do this for you.
