I have just put two stream pumps in my tank. I know they are made for water, but is it really okay to have cords submerged in water? Has anyone heard of electric shocks happening? Is it really safe?
Thanks!

In a word, yes it is safe.

You should however always have everything on your tank hooked up through a GFCI circuit.

so long as the cord is insulated well there is no problem with electricity in the water. however, as it ages the insulator can wear off and send electricity into the tank. it is unlikely to get shocked but it is always a safe practice to wear shoes to insulate your self from the ground when messing with the tank and also put in a ground probe so if there is electricity it drains out before you get shocked.
here is a grounding probe
