Water auto top off question...

Simple gravity feed FTW... no electronic parts to fail. KISS - keep it simple stupid!

each auto top-off type has its pluses and minuses.

of the auto top-off types, gravity fed from a fixed state reservoir would be my preference.

personally i just don't use an ato. i am my daily top-off - helps keep me honest with my system. ;)

I need a constand water level in my sump for my in sump skimmer working properly. Otherwise I would not need one.

I almost always used to gravity feed, and agree fully with the less things to fail notion. On my ELOS Mini I do not run an ATO for fear of this. On larger tanks I use a small resevoir so if the worst did happen, my system wouldn't even notice ;)

Just ordered one of these to handle top offs while I am gone for a few days over the Holidays. Will keep everyone posted on how it works, think it is fairly new.

Gap Products Level-Loc Automatic Top Off (ATO) Unit

The Aquamedic Niveaumat burned out on me, and had problems here and there, but was okay for a couple of years.

looks like a good unit. in the past i have used a topoff float switch from AutoTopoff.com combined with an aqualifter to fill from a fixed state reservoir.

I have the Tunze Osmolator. The sensor can get dirty but if you clean it regularly you should have no problems. I have mine hooked up with a kalk reactor. My overflow jammed and the top-off kept pumping kalk into the tank which resulted in a crash.

We use a JBJ auto top off. It has a couple of different ways to set it up. The way we have it running in order for it to stick on two things would have to fail. #1 the upper float would have to be stuck on and #2 the 14 min max timer that is built into the system would also have to fail. We use an aqualifter pump for top off so even if the top float fails and the pump stays on for 14 minutes it doesn't pump too much water into the system. We have been running this Top Off system for close to 4 years without a single problem.

I am going to use fixed volume gravity feed on my 240. Just much easier and then i don't have to worry about the pump failing or an electric switch sticking on.
