Just thinking of cost effective tank builds that incorporate a refugium. Would use 2 Eshoppes U-tubes and a "return jet". . . also would "black out" the 5 gallon and run opposite light schedules.

Just thinking out loud. . .

If possible, try to stay away from HOB overflows. Bubbles can get stuck in there and lose siphon. Then your fuge will empty into the display and overflow.

People used to use an aqualifter to pump the air out, but they've been discontinued.

A Reef Ready or Drilled tank would be much safer.
