Water change and marine pure block

Hi

I would like to do waterchanges trough my sump. but there is a marine pure block in it. So if i take water out then the block isnt completely under water.

Does it have negative effects?

its ok to briefly take them out of water, its not that brittle of a biosystem, the natural nitrate reduction biosystem.

those blocks are porous all the way through...denitrifiers abound to the core

brief air exposure isnt going to harm the denitrification.

o2 isn't lethal to that kind of bac anyway, its just not abundant in the strata they've adapted to extract energy from and some presence of oxygen doesn't kill them.

stratification turnover is common at certain zones and the bac simply rebound accordingly.

I've got a bag of marine pure in my sump, it's gone dry during water changes before and I've never noticed any problems and I've also taken it out of the sump and blasted it pretty good with a baster to clean it off in water change water and back in the sump with out any problems.

agreed, detritus ejection to keep porosity going will bring in some oxygen but have the greater effect of unplugging and more access to hungry bac

you should be fine. Make sure to rinse that block every now and then. I'll dunk mine about 10 times in a bucket of tank water to keep the pore structure clear. It could easily tolerate an hour out of water I would guess. Those things hold so much water.

If you took those blocks out for a lengthy amount of time the bacteria wouldn't die, they would just go dormant.
