I know it is a bad idea to use regular garden hoses for water changes, but are drinking water/rv lead free hoses safe to use for water changes?

If they are safe for potable water then they should be fine for the tank. Just make sure they don't have any copper or brass in/on them.

It's a easy decision take the risk and there ends up being copper you will have a dead reef.Buy some clear tubing at the LFS Or HD for like $10 and keep your reef living.

^ that, at 50 cents a foot for 1/2 ID clear hose $10 buys you plenty to hook up to a maxi jet to make lugging buckets a thing of the past.

+1....go to HD, Lowes or local hardware store and p/u clear vinyl hose. Choose your size you like and your done. Last literally years if you take care of it. Buy some nice hangers and/or brackets and store it well after each use.
