If my containers I use are not food grade can this mess up my water??

Depended on what they are, if they're not food grade, there is a chance they can seep chemicals into your water.

That's how I do things at home. I bought a plastic bucket to use for my tanks, but my partner decided to use it for touch up painting.

I bought home depot buckets a few years ago and use them for and exclusively with my Fish tanks Only. I place the covers on when not in use to eliminate contaminants and chemicals.
