My tank has been up for almost a month. I had a damsel in for cycling who died unfortunately and rotted I left a bit of it in to help make ammonia and some fish food. It was at around .50 ppm. I did a 20% water change and added a bottle of bio-spira and today the ammonia is 0 ppm and nirite is .25 ppm. Could my cycle be nearing an end or was it a mistake to do a water change?

You're going to have to give it time and see what it does. Your nitrites should climb much higher. Keep testing, if they climb higher and then fall, your nitrates should then rise. That would indicate your tank is still cycling and is fine. When your nitrates peak, you'll wanna do a large water change. If your nitrites dont budge, you probably stalled the cycle. You'll have to spike your ammonia again and start over. I always recommend using pure ammonia (no detergents!!!), seems to be a cleaner method, spikes the ammonia faster as well. Good luck! :D

I have a 20 gallon with live sand and dryrock. Putting ammonia in makes me nervous. How much and how often should I use ammonia to start the cycle.

Give it some time, test your water. If your nitrites dont rise and fall and your nitrates never rise, then i'd add the ammonia, but make 100% sure its pure ammonia with no detergents. I use a cap full for every 10 gallons. If you're nervous start with half a cap, test, and add more if needed.

I dosed 5ml once a day for two days and that's all I needed to get things going. That was 2 weeks ago and I'm still cycling.
