if im doing a recommended water change of let’s say 15%. 125 gallon tank and synergy triton 44 sump listed as holding a water Volume of 59 Gallons.
Do I do a 15% of 125 or 15% of 184?

What is the recommendation of everyone on percentage and frequency of water change?

Thanks everyone!

What is the goal of the water change?

The amount you remove and the frequency are going to be directly related to what you wish to add or remove by doing a water change.

Good resource to help navigate.
the goal of the water change initially is to remove 7 months of auto top off water that found out had 180 tds in it the whole time.
New rodi water will be added.
The goal after that it has been noted by a lot of people that solid water change schedules are key. I do triton and gfo

How is triton?

Still new to the hobby. 7 months since i added salt water and fish. I have 64 coral but nothing has grown. Half have died. Think the issue is with the water ive been using as having tds in it.

TDS can ruin your day. My mixing station is suffering right now. Bought from a guy getting out hobby. Best bet with used stuff is to replace what can be replaced and monitor. Just not worth possible issues. When playing God, as we do with our tanks, it’s best to try and avoid issue before they happen. Learned the hard way.

ya learning curve is a cash deposit that i have to pay in exchange for experience. This hobby experience costs an extra couple thousand dollars on top of everything else

If what you want is a “fresh start”. I would do them rather close together. So say 30 % today 30% a day or two later and another 30% after that. You will still have a certain amount remaining as it always diluting it not removing all of it.

Also not certain your problem is is chemical in nature. Algae and TDS creep are well linked but for decades people kept reefs on tap water.

What are your tank parameters?
What lights are you running?
Types of corals?

125 gallon tank. 59 gallon triton sump. Vertex alpha 200 sicci 5.0 return pump 1 mp40
3 radion xr 15 9” up ab+ 12 hours a day 45%intensity.
Reef saver rock. Triton core 7 dosing,
Kessil h380 refugium light
Chaeto refugium
Temp 78
Dkh 8.5
Ph 8.0
Calcium a little low at 380
Magnesium a little low at 1200
Salinity 1.024
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 12
Phosphorus 1ppb
Been using purified well water that is supposed to be more purified than the 180 tds that comes out of the sinks. I can’t test this however
That has been my sole top off water for 7 months.
I ordered rodi replacement filter and resin for my 4 stage rodi.
I used hw salt in initial fill up.
I ordered rodi booster pump set because my pressure is too low. I ordered a box of hw salt, I ordered a cor20 pump to pump the new salt water into the tank. I’m going to use 44 gallon brute trash cans to mix with heaters and $40 tunze powerheads to mix. Along with Milwaukee digital refractometer.
I have a yellow tang, flame angel, 2 blue chromosome, 1 dart fish, 2 blood shrimp, 1 tuxedo urchin and 1 emerald crab. I feed 1 cube of mysis per day. I had over 60 coral that are dying one by one. Mostly lps and zoas and a couple acros I didn’t ask for in a frag pack and 1 torch and 1 Duncan. 3 scolys 2 trachys and all scolys and trachys have died, zoas are dying, torch was found with one of two tubules dead. Acans are dying, and micromussa are all dying.
I have never done a water change until the one I’m going to do once my needed items arrive which will be here and ready to water change this Saturday (today is Monday) after talking with someone on here it seems that 7months of adding tds in ato water is the likely problem.
This saturday I want to know how big of a water change to do and how often and at what amount should I do water changes moving forward and as a part of my regular maintenance schedule. Thank you. It sucks to watch hundreds and hundreds of dollars in coral die and I can’t do anything about it (water change) for 5 days.
I won’t quit and will use this as a learning experience and move forward and over time put new coral into the tank that hopefully live and grow this time.
Thanks for everyone’s help. I seriously appreciate it!

After you do the major water change might want to reduce the photoperiod on your fuge a touch. You will be removing a lot of nitrate. Starting at low levels wont take much for the chaeto to skim it off.
