Hey all.

Just wondering if I should still prescribe to the weekly water change notion if my parameters are good and stable. In other words, should I still be doing a water change even when there isn’t anything wrong with my parameters?

Thanks

Reefers often do water changes even when the parameters are perfect.

1) to export nutrients. Phosphates and nitrates.
2) to export wastes
3 to export export chemicals like the defense chemicals of many soft corals
4) to maintain trace elements that are not typically measured.

Thank you. I was leaning towards doing weekly changes anyway. Just didn’t know if doing a change would upset the balance that seems to be there

There are def zero water change systems (proprietary) and diy versions.
U certainly could go that route, but probly best to have a plan on how you'd deal with the points PatW makes.

I’m just going to keep doing water changes every weekend. Seems to be the safest route. And honestly? I kind of like doing the routine maintenance on my tank

I do it mostly for #4

If FOWLR you can probably do them less often. My corals appreciate the new water

I definitely plan on routine water changes for my display once I get it up and running. It’ll be a reef tank so yeah lol. My quarantine tank/temporary clown and hermit holding tank is basically fish only. I have some marine pure spheres and the bio media that came with the HOB filter I’m using. But no live rock since it will eventually be a qt tank. That said I think I’ll still go ahead and do 10-15% changes every week
