What's best..... mixing salt or ocean water

It depends. I buy seawater from my LFS that has been purified so I don't have to worry about pollutants. If you're going to gather it yourself, I wouldn't. RO water and a salt mix would be better.

I really don't go gather it the aquarium places by my house have it it's just a pain to bring home 60 gallons of it that's y I wanted to start making it at home but I'm undecided on what to do ....

With RO water and a good salt mix, you should be fine. I'd ask around about what mix is the best. I have a 12g nano so getting the water isn't a big task.
