Read it in Natural Reef Aquariums by Tullock. However, he was talking about hydrometers and most of us use refractometers, so not sure if that makes a difference. He specifies that the sg is the density and we need to know temp to get actual salinity. I had heard the other part from another book, wish I could remember off hand. Maybe it was really old prior to our more modern methods of reading salinity. Maybe it is just getting down to the specific terms in chemical terms and that is the difference.
Either way, at the commercial aquarium we say salinity. I tend to say specific gravity. Potato, patato.
