Should I be irritating the sand bed when I do water changes?

No try putting your hand under the water flowing in. Or get a frisbee or Tupperware lid for this. Place in water upside down and let it disperse water

The best thing you could ever buy is a maxijet 1200 and some vinyl tube for water changes. Then you can just pump the water up and aim the tube somewhere that it won't blow the sand around.
