So I usually change 50% every month and a half is that bad. I don't have nitrate or phosphate issues but I like giving new minerals and fresher water to the coral and fish. Does it hurt? Second picture is old algae long gone.

What ever works for your tank. As long as your tank can handle the particular method that you want to keep an aquarium go for it. Many people never change their water and manage the chemistry with testing and dosing of elements. The most important thing is for you to have a successful tank. If you are not having any issues then that's great don't worry what other people are doing each tank will react and use chemistry differently.

As reefwiser stated, you want to do water changes as often and as much as needed to keep nutrients in check, and replenish missing elements. If your tank is working, then keep doing it as is. I do weekly 15% water changes...some don't change water at all. Every tank is different.
