Water Change %

its total. but nobody really knows the exact total volume, so it would just be a "convenient" volume, usually in increments of 5 gallon (or whatever bucket size you use) water bucket.
 
Ok, gents, might be a stupid question so bare with me,

Is the % of water change for just the display tank or combine with sump?

Here is a search of reef tank volume calculators link to make things easier.

The general rule is to do a 10% to %15 water change.

Some system require more some less to export nitrates and phosphates.

Once starting water changes, look at you system to see how it looks. I just adjusted up since I have been having algae issues since moving to a auto water change and my system look so much better since adjusting up two weeks ago. Nothing happen fast in reefing:) used by @Flippers4pups and is a good rule of thumb.
 
10-20% change is sufficient. Just assure the water temp of new water going into tank is the same or tad warmer- NOT cooler. A few forum posts lately with ich right after water changes
