So I just set up a 20 gallon saltwater tank with an Anthias and a Goby and the worker at my LFS said that he’s trying something out where he doesn’t do water changes and he recommended the method to me?? I’m not sure if I should take this advice it seemed a little off.... not sure what I should do.... any thoughts or advice??

I would stick with water changes with such a little tank. Some of the larger tanks use the Triton method or a form of it.In such a small tank stick with the water changes.

I agree with sfin52, just stick with water changes, it'll make life much easier.

Agree with water change but why Triton method sill not work on nanos even if it has sump? Just curious. Due to volume?

I’m not a fan, I have a 75g I do them but random and only when I have to do maintenance on the tank, lasted about 5 months at one point. Lately I been doing 5-10g once a month maybe 2

It theoretically can work but is cost prohibitive on smaller tanks. Smaller tanks are also not near as stable as larger tanks, something that is crucial for something like the triton method imo.

I would not do a no water change plan on a new system. Besides the chemistry being more varied on the smaller volume. You also do not have the biology yet to keep this long term, at the levels you want without tweaking more often. life as simple as coralline and bacteria throw the usage out of wack constantly as they battle for space. Eventually let the tank tell you when you can decrease their frequency :)

I have a 60g hex i never do water changes.. I did one like 2 weeks ago simply to remove medication i put in but other then that salt is too expensive..

I do weekly 80% water changes in my fresh water tanks like my 92g bowfront corner tank and 135g discus tank.

But yea unless i absolutetly need too im not gonna bother.. I dont use rodi either i use straight tap water and i have 30 mixed corals in ny tank with no issues.

I do dose though.. with reef crystals and hard water it brings my alc to 12 or 13 if i ever do have to do a big water change.. but then over the weeks it drops right niw its 8 or 9.. And i plan to atart dosing to keep it at 9 or 10 or so.

Its either dose or water change to keep up with calcium alk ect.. and dosing is much cheaper...specially since inatant oceon raised the prices on all their salt by like 30% recently.

In a 120 + gal tank... crap youd spend like 50$ to just do two big water changes lol

So let's say I have around 20g ish nano with sump and good filteration system.

When Nitrate and phosphate is not high like nitrates stays 5 phosphate nearly undetectable.

With alk, cal,mag, iodine dosing
I can stay away from wc for couple week or as long as my nutrient are low?
