Hi everyone! I was just curious why is it necessary to do water changes when I’m adding a gallon of water every 3-4 days?

The point of a water change is to remove nitrates from the water and if you have corals, to replace the elements needed for them. The water you are adding every 3-4 days is I hope pure RO/DI water due to evaporation. When water evaporates it leaves all salts, minerals, elements in the water and it’ll build up... hence a water change to get the bad stuff out and good stuff in.

So sounds like you have a nano. The reason why water change is to remove unwanted nutrients such as nitrates and phosphate. It also replenish trace elements. Also, you can use tank water to clean the sponge or what not.

I'm pretty new to this but water changes replenish trace elements used by your system and and help lowers Nitrates/phosphates (waste) produce by the inhabitants. The water you mentioned I assume is top off which helps keep your salinity stable.

That makes a ton of sense. I will continue to do water changes. I used to do it every two weeks but nowadays, I’m getting too lazy working on the tank so I only do it once a month. Thanks everyone!

The replacement water is fresh so has no affect on the 'stuff' in the tank water.
As mentioned, WCs replenish what's used up by critters, and removes stuff you don't want to build up.
