I have a 40 gallon tank with one fish and about 10 different kinds of coral. I’m doing about a 10 gallon water change weekly. Is it really necessary to be doing this weekly, if my numbers are staying the same?

I do 10 to 20 percent water changes weekly, and it keeps my parameters stable. I don’t have coral yet, but I think doing water changes is very important. I know corals are very susceptible to problems when there is a change in water quality. I think doing a 25% water change on your tank is a good idea and that you should keep doing this.

edit - did not see the part where you said you only had one fish in that case yes you could lower it, maybe 10% a week?

Depending on the age of your tank, I would slow down on the water changes. Younger tanks need more water changes older less IMO. I think regardless you are doing too much.

The problem with water changes is that people burn out on them. It is fine for maybe 6 months, but do them weekly for 5 years and you will come to loathe them.

Your load is pretty light. If you tank is under a year I would do the amount you are doing once a month. If it is over a year I would do the amount you are doing every other month. That's my experience.

Hope that helps. :)

Great thank you. It’s been running for about a year and half

I would switch to bi-weekly and if things continue to thrive then I would move to once a month.
