So I just want to make sure I understand this aspect of my saltwater aquarium as this being my first time. I am in the process of cycling my tank. i want to be prepared for when it eventual cycles and might as well throw all my dumb questions out into the forums. My question is on my plan on how to deal with adding water to the tank and when I do water changes. When my water gets low I plan to top off with distilled water. When I do my actual water changes I would be planning on adding new salt water. Also for smaller tanks mine being 13.5 gallons. How often do you guys do water changes on yours. Thanks.

If you have a local fish store, buy RODI water. You want to make your saltwater with that too. Most people do weekly water changes or every other week, about 10-20% of the water.

Weekly water changes of 10% are pretty normal.

Adding fresh water for top off is best done with a ATO (auto top off) unit. If done by hand, it's best to mark the tank with a sharpie when full and proper salinity and as it evaporates, add fresh till back to the line daily. This is important to keep the salinity stable.

I use RODI water for top off. And RODI mixed with my salt for water changes. i’m not a big fan of distilled water. 13.5 gallon? Depending on the filtration. I would start with 1 gallon a week.

If you start slowly you can find that comfort zone of where you need to be to maintain the aquarium. Stability
