Water changes!!

Saturday at 11 in the morning is a ritual for me.I know at that time all the little parameter swings have stopped for the day and in general I just enjoy that part of the day with my tanks!

I asked about it because today at mid day, I did a 20% water and I noticed that my frags of green polyps and zoas hid after just right away. Im new to this hobby and it made me worried!!!

did you check the salinity and temp of the new water?
if its not super close or exactly the same it could really stress out your corals

I never really payed much attention to the time of day. Its usually just when I have the time and the water mixed. I pull most of the water out of the sump with the return pump and replace it into the sume as well. That way the new water gets mixed really well with the water still in the tank and the temp and chemistry don't really have much effect. If you think about it, in the ocean, there are cooler currents that swell up from deeper water and cool off the reef and bring fresh nutrients as the tides change. I don't really think its that big a deal unless your parameters are really off.

You need to start keeping a detailed log of everything.From basic things like water changes and parameters to cleaning and dosing.I think youll find that upon checking earlier dates in your log,youll know what to expect when something happens or be able to fore tell a few things.

for sure its not like it was a 10 degree plummet or something, i usually see some retraction after a water change too but ive noticed the closer my temp and salinity levels are the faster everything wakes up!

How big a water change did you perform? Do you have a sump? Did you dump the water in the tank all at once or into the sump and let the return pump mix it?
