I am new to the hobby but am having a problem with water changes. I have a back issue and cannot due large water changes at one time. I can do a four or five gallon change in my 135 gallon tank each night for say five days every other week but not all at once. Is that as effective? Also does anyone have an idea on how to do changes with out the lifting and carrying?

I am starting to get some bleaching and I know I need to do changes more often. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I use a pump and mix all my water in a tote next to the tank then use a maxi jet 1200 to pump the new water up and into the tank.

RODI unit with a pump from local fish store use pump to mix salt then get a hose from a hardware store that fits the pump this is how I do mine I just built a little trolley to wheel it around the house

You may be making too much of a change in water chemistry if corals are bleaching. I would suggest smaller weekly water changes to minimize the swings in water parameters. I do 5 gallons/week in my 100 and all my lps and sps are doing very well. Stable parameters are key.

If you're also siphoning into buckets then dumping them just get a python hooks up to sink creaks siphon right do it the come in like 25ft 50ft and maybe 100ft

Are smaller changes more frequently as good as larger changes every two weeks?

I'm of the thinking that smaller more frequent water changes are better and promote better stability than less frequent larger ones.

I have a 55g and I try to do a weekly 10g water change ...my question is does it matter if I am pulling water from my sump or display tank?

Here's a great article on water changes: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-10/rhf/

Long story short, larger water changes are more effective at nutrient export, but that may not be your only reason for doing a water change. I do 1g per day water changes automatically.
