it all depends on the needs of your tank.

water changes are useful to replenish nutrients as well as remove bad or excess nutrients. you can change 100% every week if you want or do 10%. the higher your bioload, the more I would change, the more coral you have the more I would change. its very dependent on the needs of your tank and how your setup works.

No water changes of any consequence (OK, I did a few tiny "water changes" when acclimating new livestock) for exactly a year now. Corals never looked better.

Automatic water change 2 times every day. Total of 1 1/2 gallons a day. Everything in the tank is loving it!

I test my water weekly and if everything checks out then I dont do a water change. Typically my alk starts to get low first but once any parameter starts to get outside of my preferred range. The RODI gets a rockin and some salt gets a churnin

you also have to factor in your nutrient export and if youre dosing or not. theres a lot more to it than just how much you should change. its why you should change that much and if you should change that much.

I use an automatic system (a dual head pump on a timer) to change water about 10 times a deal for a total of about 1% daily. I spend less than 10 minutes a month to do this.

I discuss the impacts of water changes in different amounts here:

No water changes. o. none. NA. noghto. negative. not needed.
+1

have ran a mixed reef tank for up to nine years and FW planted system for up to 9 years also with no water changes. Nitrates and phosphates unmeasureable. FW tank 10g had a more or less stable population of 30 live bearers for years.

my .02

I do around 1% daily automatic water changes. I see only benefits and no negatives in doing them. I see no reason not to do them. I only know of 1 system that has what I would consider to be successful not doing them.
