I'm really really new to this so have to ask.

I (finally) did my first water change today. All my Fw and marine systems.

Do you think this will harm my systems, cause instabilities or crashes, kill my fish, wither my corals, cause the macros to have sex?

I really need to no this.

waiting for response.

Oh yea

One system has been running since 2002 with no water changes. So this isn't a just past the cycle type thing.

This is a qurstion that the answer to can vary greatly, depending on tank conditions, quality of water used, and % of water changed., but since you are not really newb you already know that, HAFD.

beasl.....lol....you fly in the face of convention. I salute you!

I am very curious though, why now do your first water change in about 8 years ???

I would add that if you're just doing a 20-30% or so change, you probably don't have anything to worry about since your tank has obviously been evaporating water that you have replaced daily over this time span. (what were you replacing it with....limewater?) Then again, if you are talking about a 3 gallon pico, changing a 1/3rd of its volume might 'cause some issues.

Where can I find some pics of your tank ???

Tagging along as I am also new to water changes. I am at a year with no water changes and about ready to transfer the contents of my 75 to 110 gallon rubbermade tank so I can start my 220 build. I will try to use as much water from the 75 but in the end I will probably end up doing a 50% water change.

So do you think I should take the new water out and put the old water back in?

How are you going to know the new water from the old water? Did you make name tags for each drop or maybe engraved something on them? If you don't have the water trained to return to the bucket it's going to be a lot of work to retrieve.

Just use a strainer since the older water will be thicker with all the nasty stuff in it.....:snicker:

You still using tap water and crushed oyster shell? I know you from RDO lol. FWIW I did a 100% w/c on my sons tank a few days ago, tanks never looked better.

Yep on the reef tank.

Perhaps the oyster shell has trapped the new water. So all I have to do is squeeze it dry. Finding the old water in the septic tank could be a problem though.

ps am using diy 2 part now also. after a few months alk dropped down.
