water changes

My advice to everyone is to treat your decisions as a science experiment. What are the results of your decisions after you test your tank waters quality? Start asking yourself every logical question: what’s my bio-load? Do I feed too much, do I feed too little? Why are Nitrates 10? Why are my Nitrates 180? Why do I struggle with algae? Etc. etc. Cause and effect is alway present. There is an answer for every reefing issue. You will find it. Good luck.

Does anyone feel a 30 percent water change every 6 to 8 weeks is acceptable?
I agree with @Glenner’sreef, though maybe I'll go into a bit more detail.

The thing is, some people do not ever do water changes, while others do a lot, and it entirely depends on their setup. So the question is yeah, what is your setup, how is everything doing, and what are your plans re: feeding, dosing, etc.?

Many different techniques work well for many different reefers. Your mileage will vary... Also - Acceptable is a subjective term.

Question - why this particular change rate/time line? Maybe understanding your requirements will help everyone understand what you are trying to accomplish.

anything is acceptable on your own tank, sometimes I do water changes just cause I'm bored. But as mentioned above, the when of doing water changes is not nearly as important as the why.

For me personally only doing a 30% water change in 8 weeks is too little, and I'd also try to avoid changing that much water at one time for fear of parameter swings, if I don't have my new water perfectly match the tank, unless removing something specific from the water was the goal.
I just did the math and in 8 weeks I change 80% but at just under 1.5% per day with an AWC.
