Water depth in the refugium Op's wanted please

So how deep is or like it to be the water level in your refugium?
I assume most Folks just keep it at the suggested skimmer depth . I'm curious how deep your's is & why . Would You want deeper water for more area or say shallow for better light penetration.
My skimmer wants 8 to 10 inches . I run mine at 8.5 . So that's where it's always been however this new sump has adjustable panels to control this. I just looking for your Opinion Thanks !

I would think as deep as you want as long as you can get good rotation on cheato assuming that's the type of algae you're growing and how strong your light is.... mine was 8" deep but that's as deep as I could go, next one will be probably 14" orso.

I have the Trigger Systems Sapphire 34 and run the fuge at max adjustable depth of 9.5”. I’d adjusted deeper if I could. The cheato grows in a cube the full size of that section ( 10.5”x14.5”) and about 7-8 inches deep. It is totally full and can’t move at all. My light is a Kessil H80 on full power, and I’m sure this is the limiting factor for depth of cheato growth.

Reasons I run the fuge at max depth are:

1. Less noise from smaller waterfalls between chambers
2. More total system water volume
3. More fuge water volume

I have a 50 gallon sump and wanted to maximize water volume. So I calculated approximate back flow volume when pumps were turned off and made my baffles to that maximum height.....15 inches. My return section is in the middle, and when pumps are turned off, water level goes just to the height of the baffles.

Oh ya, The pic helps a lot! You have a good drop from the ref to the middle section . Looks fairly calm so no problem there.
So the refugium panel will only give me 11.5 inches . So I'm stuck with that depth . I would liked to get more . I'll look again to see if I missed anything. Oh I like the fact you don't use baffles. II think they are unnecessary & take up too much space .
So as soon as I get the new water all mixed & ready this new sump is going in !
