My water is evaporating ridiculously I just added a gallon of fresh because it was low but then it went back the way it was how can I stop it from evaporating so quickly

What's the room temperature? Warm water evaporates much faster in a cooler room. Also cocering your tank/sump should help.

Check the salinity to make sure it's actually evaporation and you don't have a leak somewhere that you don't know about.

I tested it and it was the same as I last tested it .0025 ppm and my tanks temp is 81.5 I just bought a fan to cool it down I don’t know if that’s the reason but I got the fan and it has been keeping the tank a lot cooler than it was

Yes, evaporative cooling can certainly increase your ATO needs dramatically. I have two RSM250s, which are three foot tanks with canopies. They are notorious for overheating, and are also notorious for requiring finicky, proprietary cooling fans that are no longer manufactured. I was overjoyed when I found a water-cooling fan unit on eBay last year...but less happy about the fact that, while it did cool down the tank, the evaporative effects of the fans necessitated 1 gallon of RO/DI topup water per day. That's not a lot when you compare with people on this site who need 5 to 10 gallons of topup water per day, but it is when you consider the fact that this is a closed canopy system.

Reducing evaporation with your chosen method of cooling will be a difficult task.

Let's see some pics of your setup. :)

Add a glass top to your aquarium is the simple answer, but it may increase the temp. or your tank may be too big. I use this 14g nano as a QT and I go through about 1L every 3-4 days with HOB filter and wave maker pump.

You can add a lid to your sump. I use basic white plastic panel from local big box store. Noticed big difference with less evaporation

Cooler tank and lots of evaporation
OR
Warmer tank and little evaporation.
What's better for you?

Do you have central air?
Basement sump?
They can help too.

Edit sorry, was typing when you were.

Buy an ATO unit. Couldn't imagine trying to manually top off a tank!

And yes, the purpose of a fan for cooling is evaporative cooling. Which means it causes water to evaporate to cool the tank and in doing so requires more top off water.

Alternative would be a glass top and a chiller.

i have a 70g waterbox, open no lid, tank 78f room temp 72, the ato uses 1 gallon a day

Sorry I got back so late but ya I didn’t think of an ato I think I’m going to wait though because I was going to upgrade tanks soon so I’m just going to wait for the ato and just for fill it with water with water jugs but thanks for the help
