Water flow in refugium

Been using a refugium for years and decided to clean it. First time in many years. Was shock at the grime in it. I am in the process of rebuilding and was wondering if anyone ever added a small pump to circulate the cheato. Noticed there was lots of grungy algae that I am sure been in there for ever.

I've tried that but the pump just kept getting clogged with chaeto.
