Hi All,

Looking into some new holding tanks for RO/DI and mixed saltwater. Would like 55 gallon barrels if we can find them reasonably priced. Where is the best place to purchase these? Would a Brute trashcan with a tight fitting lid work just as well?

Also, we're thinking of grabbing a large (100 gallon) trough for rock curing and possibly incorporating in into our new sump system down the road.

Looking into either "Tuff Stuff" or "Rubbermaid". Does anyone have pros and cons on either of teh below? Both are the same price, so we're torn on which to buy. They are used for horse troughs so I'm assuming both are food grade containers.

TIA!!

if your in a major city I'm sure there is someone selling used food grade barrels. here they go for about $20. you just have to clean them well.

Thanks Guys!

That's a great price @Lionfish Lair, I might have to grab a couple from them!

Yes @tom reilly I did find a bunch on the local craigslist site for only $18/barrel, but I'm apprehensive to use them because you never know what they could have been used for previously. Would soaking with vinegar water or bleach water, completely remove any impurities? This approach would be much less expensive, but makes me nervous for sure!!!

Not bleach for marine use. Food grade means that the plastic will not leach what ever is stored in them in to the plastic. Piclel barrels are perfect for the reason that when curing pickles vinager is used along with salt, garlic and dill.

Ooooh ok, gotcha! I thought it meant that the chemicals from the plastic wouldn't leach into whatever was being stored inside. So they would be easy to clean then, which is a plus! (with vinegar and NOT bleach) :)

Yes they would be easy to clean. Nothing is leached either way or they could not be used for food.

Ok good, that makes me feel better. After looking around a bit, the used ones I found on CL appear to be the pickle and olive barrels. So they would be perfect!

Nice, thanks! Yea, you're probably right. Of course the taller tanks are ideal for most because they take up less floor space, so let's charge for shipping! Ha!

I've always bought my 55g drums from a local supplier of DIY wine & beer making products. The one local to me sells used drums that were previously used for food products. I think the going price is now $25.

Thanks for the tip, I'll see if I can find one in my area!!
