water in sump rising

as it says in the title the water in my sump rose today while i was at work. i check my skimmer to make sure it was running and had water up in it so elimanate that from the equation. i also checked the return pump which is still pumping. the water in the main tank doesnt LOOK lower but i dont have a mark to know. all in all the sump seems to have gained about 2.5 inches of water its a 10 gal sump. so idk how much water that equates to. i checked salinity to make sure nobody else added salt or fresh and its on point. my wife said they werent home all day and didnt touch it so im wondering if anyone else has had this happen and what possible reasons this could happen.

Your overflow is to much for your pump to keep up with. Or your pump is old and needs replaced, and or cleaned.

Not sure what the issue is but 2.5 inches in a 20 x 10 tank is 2 gallons.

yep Need a bigger pump or to see if theres a clog anywhere in the line...... Or find out who snuck in to top you off.
Either way sumps normally dont gain water they evaporate....

thats why i ws questioining it because i know it normally evaporates. and the pump had been working fine and is still pumping out good.. ill pull it and clean it and see what happens

Do you have sponges to help filter the water? If you do, clean them and the water flow will return to normal.

that would have been my first thought had the water dropped in the return side but both side rose zman

so i cleaned my pump and now it seems to be outrunning my overflow to the sump .. i think i may need to add a valve in there to control the amount of flow coming back to the main tank. idk. im new to all of this and its kicking my tail right now
