So lately I've noticed how loud it can get - just the water falling into the socks:

Then I realized it was being caused by the little handles inside the plastic rings. Water was running across them and then falling down to the surface of the water inside the socks. A few quick snips and... silence. Should make them a lot easier to turn inside out for washing too:

Maybe not news to some, but I'm pretty happy with the discovery!

Thanks for sharing! I'll have to remember this since I'm installing a new sump next week that will use a similar setup!

for that type of sock holder, the water level in the sock section should be pretty close to the sock ring.

water level in sump is set by the baffle height.

this is an attempt at a diy sock holder that use the same setup. I abandoned the idea due to the water splashing sound as I cannot change the water level height on my existing sump.

Interesting idea. Having the water level that high would make it 14" - way too high for the skimmer.

Another tall baffle just to the right of the socks could make it happen but space is a premium... and it works fine as is.

I had a similar problem. I resolved it by removing filter socks. This also solved my issue with washing them once a month!

if you look at ready made sumps with the same type of filter sock holder, you will see that they all set the water level in sock section really high. So you will need to modify your sump to do that. Also, the filter sock section is usually completely covered to muffle any noise to make it completely quiet. This type of sock holder makes full use of the socks, but defeats the full siphon herbie drain and introduces a noise problem.

Or they use short socks I've noticed:

I don't have any problem with the full siphon on the "Bean" style overflow - does Herbie behave differently somehow?

yes, the idea is the distance from sock ring to water must be minimal. also notice the filter sock section has a top cover. I think yours is exposed right?

no problem on the drain. what I meant was the whole basis of herbie/bean animal full siphon drain is defeated because of the introduction of water drop into the filter sock, compared to normal sock configuration where the drain goes into the sock maintaining full siphon the whole time.

I am running a Herbie drain system with a dual filter sock system ( like the Synergy sump ) and my sock compartment is dead silent. The only time I hear water, is when the emergency drain activates.

Actually, it works quite well with these set ups. The drains discharge underwater in a small section adjacent to the socks to keep the siphon. Then the water flows up and onto the top of the socks before going back down to the rest of the sump. Makes changing the socks much easier.

I see what you mean, the 'silent' aspect of the Herbie & Bean is defeated. I must say tho, now that those little handles are gone the flow into the socks is silent. Even after changing socks today.
