Hey so I’ve had a reef tank for a little over a year now and I recently noticed that my torch coral and my frogspawn don’t look to happy. I tested my parameters and everything is just a little to perfect…
Salinity- 1.025
Nitrates- 5ppm
Phosphates-0.25ppm
Calcium-400
dKh-9
This is in a 100 gallon tank with a 50 gallon sump with 120 gallon protein skimmer.
I do weekly 10 gallon water changes with my ro/di filter.
I have a pair of clownfish, invertebrates, cotton candy torch, purple tipped frogspawn, zoas, Kenya tree, and some Xenia.
Not sure what could be the problem either my dkh dropped from 11 I think or my api testers are just laughing at me.
These are the corals now

This is what they looked like a week ago.

Nitrates look to low they like it between 20 and 40, phosphates are good some people would freak out over 0.25 but that’s good, calcium is low needs to come up to 460, and what is your magnesium at, torches love mag at 1500

I might be more inclined to say “tolerate” than “like” on the nitrate levels … but IME with euphilids flow and lighting are the 1st things I check when unhappy
Edit add: Many run tanks @ 11-ish w/o issue but not me…just anecdotally seems a lil less touch-n-go when running at 8ish - 9ish …again thats total anecdotal suspicion

Now to think of it I have changed the flow but not the lighting

If they are closed up does that mean the flow is to much or to little?

I hate to refer you to a vid, but check out Tidal Gardens vid on euphillias (sp) anyway he always does solid vids
but short answers is the lower the better (but not zero) … again, the video explains it better
as for my personal and very long experience with them:
- watch for brown jelly disease and remove/ treat specimens showing signs fast,
- the lower the flow, the “puffy’r” they get..I sorta slowly rock’em back-n-forth if you got the type of wave makers to do that
- folks say this and that on lighting, all I do is when new, I’ll move em around until they look happy…personally I’ve never nailed down any PAR setting other than some seem to adjust to high light better than others…I can’t give you any particular pattern to it as I’ve had them in low light AND high light… IME 70 - 150 ish PAR but I won’t argue and leave it to others to commit to a particular value…

I moved the flow back to normal where it was pointed at them and now it looks like they are starting to puff up a little more but if they don’t puff all the way up in the next couple days then I’m gonna try that.
