Water polishing with Vortex Diatomaceous earth powder.

The question I have is. I've been using My Vortex filter and using Diatomaceous Earth powder to polish the water in my 37 Gallon nano reef. I haven't seen any issues arise except some brn algae growth. Am I hurting my system by doing this? Should I stop? Second question is how would you set up a exterior sump on a system that's self contained so I could use the socks to polish vice the vortex. Any help would be awesome on this issue.

The two are unrelated or at least not exclusively related, the light brown growth and the water polisher

You can get that algae with lighting changes, substrate changes and feeding changes...to me if you want to water polish or not that's fine.
