I'm designing a new build.... will be a 180 (6x2x2) or 300dd (6x3x2). Will be mixed reef (leaning toward SPS) and mostly likely pennisula tank or in-wall ....

I have the following options:

1 MP60 and 2 MP40s

or

2 MP60s...
Which one would you recommended?

Why not 3 mp60?? With what you put up, the 1mp60 and 2mp40 would provide more flow.

Just in case you aren't 100% dedicated to the Ecotech solution....

For a long tank I'd pick something other than ecotech... Tunze's are probably the ideal in that scenario IMO - especially for the 180.

A pair of 6105's are the norm, but there are lots of good ways to skin that cat. If hiding the pumps is important, use a "Stream rock" and actually hide the pumps vs hanging the motors on the outside of the glass. ;)

I agree with the Tunze. I have 1 Tunze 6105 and 2 MP40s in a 120. Got the Tunze to help out while I returned the dry side of my MP40 due to a bad bearing. Although i like the sleek look of the MP40s, the Tunze is an overall better pump. Very controllable and moves a ton of water!

I have found that with a mixed reef mp60s are a lot of flow for LPS like torches, frogspawn and hammer corals. If you intend on keeping these then you will want to be particular about where you place those corals.

If you are sticking with Ecotech and straight acros then I would go with 2 mp60s and an mp40. If mixed reef I think 3 mp40s would be great.
If you are looking at a peninsula and are not dead set on the Ecotech solution then I would highly recommend a Gyre 150 on the wall side of the tank blowing over the top of the reef. If this is a mixed reef that should be sufficient flow all by itself and will leave you with an 3 panels of unobstructed views.

I would highly recommend a Gyre 150 on the wall side of the tank blowing over the top of the reef.

I don't mean the following to knock the Gyre or the recommendation...very interesting pump...but just for what it's worth...

One could acheive the same/or similar effect with one or two hidden Stream pumps at the top of the rocks.

If you are sticking with Ecotech and straight acros then I would go with 2 mp60s and an mp40.

I do agree with this if he'd going 100% Ecotech....even for non-acros. 40's don't have the reach needed...three would barely do IMO.

Go with the Gyre for side flow and 2x MP40QDWs for back to front.
